The 21st century will be the
century of biology and medicine. Tissue-Engineering
will be one of the key technologies. Among other things, this young
branch of medicine deals with the reproduction of tissue from adult
stem cells.
Adult stem cells,
by scientific definition, are those cells whose future form has not
yet been predetermined and which, subsequently, can be programmed
from surrounding tissue into any other form. A very large number of
versatile adult stem cells can be found in the skin.
The adult stem cells play a decisive role in repairing the body: they
can replace defective cells and ensure that the organ or cell cluster
can reassume its original function.
The goal of Tissue Engineering is to repair body tissue and organs
with the help of adult stem cells, to restore or prolong natural bodily
functions over ever-increasing spans of time.
